Concentrates 101: Shatter, Sauce, Live Rosin & More, Explained

Shatter, sauce, badder, live resin, live rosin, hash and RSO, explained in plain English, with real examples from our Carneys Point shelf.

Walk up to our concentrate case and you’ll see words like sauce, badder, cold cure and persy. If that reads like a foreign menu, you’re not alone. This guide breaks down every format we carry, what makes each one different, and how to start if you’ve never dabbed before.

The one question that sorts everything: solvent or solventless?

Every concentrate is a way of separating the plant’s resin, where the cannabinoids and terpenes live, from the plant material. There are two ways to do it.

  • Solvent-based extracts use a solvent such as butane or propane to pull the resin out, which is then purged away. Shatter, sauce, badder and live resin are made this way.
  • Solventless extracts use only ice, water, heat and pressure. Hash and rosin are made this way, and they usually sit at the top of the price range because yields are small and the process is slow.

Neither is “better” for everyone. Solvent extracts often deliver big flavor and potency at a friendlier price. Solventless is the pick for people who want the most hands-off, plant-forward process.

“Live” means the plant was frozen right after harvest instead of dried and cured, which keeps more of its original aroma. “Persy” is 710 Labs’ name for its top tier of rosin and hash.

How people actually use concentrates

  • A dab rig or e-rig. A small amount is vaporized on a heated surface. Electronic rigs like the Puffco Peak Pro handle the temperature for you.
  • A nectar collector. A simple handheld tool for small hits, no rig required.
  • On top of flower. A little hash or rosin crumbled over a bowl or rolled into a joint.
  • RSO and FSO come in a syringe and are measured in small, precise amounts.

You’ll find rigs, nectar collectors and accessories in our accessories section.

Starting out: go small, then wait

Concentrates are far stronger than flower. Start with a portion about the size of a grain of rice, then wait before taking more. Ask a budtender which format fits how you like to consume. That conversation is free, and it’s what we’re here for.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between live resin and live rosin?

Both start with plants frozen fresh at harvest. Live resin is extracted with a solvent. Live rosin is made without solvents, by washing the plant in ice water to collect hash and then pressing that hash with heat and pressure.

Is shatter the same as wax?

They’re cousins. Both are solvent-based, but shatter is glassy and brittle while softer textures like badder and budder are often called wax.

What concentrate should a beginner try first?

There’s no single answer, so ask a budtender. Whatever you choose, start with a portion about the size of a grain of rice and wait before having more.

How much concentrate can I buy at once in New Jersey?

Up to 4 grams per transaction for adults 21 and older, per the New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission.

When is Wax Wednesday?

Every Wednesday at The Frosted Nug in Carneys Point, NJ. Concentrate deals change week to week, so check today’s offers.

For adults 21 and older. Concentrates are potent; start with a small amount. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not drive after consuming.
